Theme and Graphics

If you can still remember what the Top Gun movie was all about, you’re going to feel right at home in this video slot, as it’s basically a direct adaptation of the flick as far as the audiovisuals are concerned. We’ve already seen a couple of franchise-based games messing things up in the audiovisual department despite having plenty of source material to build on, but we’ve got no bad words to say about Top Gun, which is using its source material in a very admirable manner.

We would, of course, appreciate a bit more variety as far as the symbols are concerned, as it seems to us that it’s already high time for Playtech to do away with the traditional suite of A-K-Q-J completely, but we’re giving other games developers a free pass for that anyway, so we aren’t going to give Top Gun a big thumbs up for this detail either. The one big issue? Tom Cruise is nowhere to be found in this slot game!

Now for the audio – although there isn’t a lot of music and sound effects, what there is works beautifully well with the somewhat nostalgic atmosphere of the game, which is something that fans of the movie are undoubtedly going to appreciate.

Gameplay

While the audiovisuals of Top Gun are rather praiseworthy, the same unfortunately cannot be said about the game’s gameplay features, which leave much to be desired and which largely fail to reproduce the true Top Gun adrenaline.

Apart from the mandatory Wild symbols that can work as substitutes for all the other regular symbols, there’s the randomly-activated Dogfight Wilds feature that introduces additional Wild symbols and which is supposed to send your winnings to new heights. Although it does get triggered fairly frequently, the wins are usually nothing to write home about and the given spin takes ages to get resolved, which takes something away from the game’s flow.

The main selling point, however, is the Danger Zone feature that gets activated whenever you get three Free Spins symbols during a single spin. It comes with a solid number of free spins and there’s also the additional bonus of the aforementioned Dogfight Wilds feature being active during them, but don’t expect that much from it – not only will you need to be very lucky to trigger it, but the eventual payout is going to be fairly small more often than not. It’s quite disappointing to see such an intriguing feature getting implemented so poorly, but that’s what we apparently have to roll with.

Technicalities

Unlike the vast majority of franchise-based slot games, Top Gun is using the 243 Ways to Win feature instead of traditional paylines. To be fair, this feature can’t be considered to be particularly innovative anymore, but it does feel like a breath of fresh air nonetheless and we appreciate that Playtech included it in a franchise-based slot.

Those who don’t want to risk a lot of money on a single spin can enjoy the game for as little as €0.25, but there’s also a lot to be liked here if you’re a high-roller, as it’s possible to play for as much as €250 per spin.

The theoretical RTP (return to player) of the game is 94.93%, which is slightly below what we would consider to be the industry’s standard.

Summary

Overall, we have mixed feelings about Top Gun. On one hand, the slot does get the atmosphere right and we’re sure that it’s going to be a very nostalgic trip for every single fan of the original movie. On the other hand, the gameplay is somewhat lacking and there’s also no Tom Cruise to be found anywhere, which is strange to say the least.

If you’re a fan of the movie, you probably owe it to yourself to give the slot game a go and it certainly isn’t the worst game ever even if you aren’t, but we aren’t convinced that the game has any lasting appeal that will keep you glued to it for more than a few days regardless of what you think about the Top Gun franchise. It’s fairly solid on all fronts, but it’s definitely not the big release that many were hoping for.
