When it comes to video games, you’d be hard-pressed to find something that’s more retro than Space Invaders, the game that basically began it all. And, with retro themes now being very much in fashion, it’s not surprising that we see more and more games developers coming up with slots that build on retro video games. The Space Invaders slot that was released by Playtech in 2016 certainly belongs to the more intriguing attempts – and that’s why we’ve decided to take a look at it in a full-fledged review.

Theme and Graphics

Although Space Invaders does build on the old-school video game of the same name, only some of the game’s symbols are a direct reference to what was going on back then. The rest of them are modern takes on the theme, so you’re also going to see some purple aliens and green UFOs. The nice thing is that pretty much all the animations and effects are a throwback to classic Space Invaders, so the slot just oozes style and atmosphere in that regard – and chances are that you’re going to fall in love with it if you’re one of those players that spent hundreds of hours playing the original Space Invaders in their youth.

The audio nicely complements the visuals, so there’s quite a bit to be liked when it comes to how the slot feels. It’s all retro, so you don’t need to bother if cutting-edge audiovisuals are what you’re looking for – but it did come as a welcome change in style for us.

Gameplay

Now that we’ve got the theme and graphics covered, it’s time to take a look at the slot’s gameplay features.

Firstly, there’s the Invaders Turn Wild feature that can get activated whenever the cannon stops under reel 2 or 4. What the cannon does is that it turns low win symbols into Wilds in order to create winning lines – and the kicker is that these Wild symbols come with a x2 win multiplier.

Secondly, there’s the UFO Wild feature that gets activated whenever the cannon aligns with a reel that has at least one green UFO. Once that happens, the cannon will shoot the UFO, triggering a free respin with added Wilds in the process.

And, if you’re one of those players that like to just sit back and enjoy the action without having to get involved too much, you’re going to enjoy the game’s basic autoplay feature -just choose how many spins you want to go through and hope for the cannon to do some serious damage!

Technicalities

Space Invaders takes place on a completely orthodox playing field that has ten different paylines spread across five reels and three rows, but the one interesting thing is that payline wins pay from both left to right and right to left.

There’s only one slider that you can use in order to adjust the desired betting stakes, but it does offer a very good number of options, so there’s nothing that we could possibly criticize on this particular front. In practical terms – the minimal bet stands at €0.10, but you can play for as much as €200.

The theoretical RTP (return to player) of Space Invaders has been set to 96.16%, a value that’s actually more than reasonable.

Summary

All in all, we’ve got mixed feelings about Space Invaders. On one hand, it’s definitely one of the best releases that we saw from Playtech in 2016, combining interesting ideas with rock-solid gameplay that’s also quite pacy. On the other hand, there are so many rough edges all over the place that we simply can’t put it on the level of top-notch slots.

Is it a game worth checking out? It certainly is, especially if you like Space Invaders or slots with retro themes. Is it a game that you absolutely need to play and that you’re bound to fall in love with? It certainly isn’t.
