Although there are plenty of online wallets out there at the moment, only some of them have been around for as long as WebMoney – and that alone is something that should catch your attention, as it does say something about how good these guys are. However, summing things up in just a single sentence wouldn’t do the situation justice, so we’ve decided to bring you a much closer look at what the service is all about.

About WebMoney

WebMoney – or, in full, WebMoney Transfer, first saw the light of the day in Moscow back in 1998, with its main stated goal being to provide a global payment settlement environment for online business activities. Although the original plan was to provide the service for clients in Russia and nearby countries, WebMoney is now available to users all across the world – in fact, the company claims that it currently caters to more than 30 million clients. Despite this expansion, the headquarters of the firm can still be found in Moscow.

How It Works

WebMoney is pretty much your standard online wallet as far as the basic operations are concerned. First of all, you’ll have to upload funds to one of your WebMoney wallets – yes, that’s right, you’re going to get more than just one in order to be able to utilize all the different services and currencies. This can be done by a large variety of methods, including bank wire, credit cards and various money transfer services. Each of the methods carries different fees, however, so you should pick the right one carefully.

Paying with WebMoney is then as simple as it could possibly be – you just choose it as your preferred payment method at the merchant or online casino you want to pay, enter your credentials and confirm your payment. Since all transfers are virtually instantaneous, there should be no artificial delays that would prevent you from getting your chosen product or service as soon as possible.

Since WebMoney is a full-fledged online wallet, you can naturally also use it to receive money, which you can then withdraw back to your bank account. Alternatively, you can also order a virtual card from WebMoney or get the funds as cash at one of WebMoney’s agents (although it needs to be mentioned that its network isn’t nearly as big as the network of, say, Western Union).

Additional Features

WebMoney is one of the few online payment services that give you a large number of additional features to work with if you so desire, so let’s just mention some of the more interesting ones here – after all, you’ll have plenty of time to explore all of them if you decide to give WebMoney a try.

Firstly, WebMoney can be used as a platform for crowdfunding, with plenty of options available for both those who need to raise money and those who would like to fund a project or two. Secondly, WebMoney can also be used as a platform for loans – in fact, it even has its own debt market that you can play with if that’s something that interests you. And, to round things off, we can also mention that you can set up your own WebMoney e-mail address and use a dedicated file storage service.

Privacy and Security

Unlike many other services, WebMoney can, if used correctly, provide you with an additional layer of privacy, since you don’t necessarily have to use your bank account when paying with WebMoney. The most important thing here is that even withdrawals can be done not only to your bank account, but also to a number of other places, including virtual debit cards, so you should have no problems getting your money back even if you don’t want to get your bank involved.

As far as security is concerned, it’s possible to say that WebMoney has a reasonably good track record in terms of trustworthiness, although there are some things that do raise some uncomfortable questions. Most importantly, WebMoney relies on a number of third parties to operate successfully, which means that some of its components and features could go offline without WebMoney having any influence over them. Furthermore, this means that your data might not be as secure as they are at most of the other services – after all, it’s always easier to trust a single person than it is to trust a group of people.

Known Issues/Problems

Although WebMoney is generally considered to be one of the most reputable businesses in the industry, we do feel obliged to mention some of the notable issues that you may have with this service. Firstly, WebMoney is extremely reluctant to accept transactions from Western Union and PayPal, so, if you like those services, you might find it hard to include WebMoney in your repertoire. Secondly, as we’ve already mentioned in the previous section, WebMoney uses a number of third parties to run the entire project, which is in contrast with how most of the other payment services operate.

Apart from that, some of you might also be slightly uncomfortable with the fact that the service is being operated from Russia, a country that doesn’t really have the best track record when it comes to business freedom.

All in all, WebMoney is a very useful service that can be used for much more than just online casino deposits and withdrawals. In some ways, it is even slightly better than the other online wallets out there, although whether you should indeed prefer it over them is largely down to your personal tastes. Unfortunately, it seems to us that the number of online casinos and sportsbooks that are willing to accept WebMoney payments has somewhat decreased over the last couple of years, which is something that could easily put you off using this service if online casino payments are what you’re interested in first and foremost.
