Trustly

Despite being considered quite obsolete by many, direct bank transfers are still the most popular payment method when it comes to paying larger sums online. We fully realize that many have switched to credit card payments and that some have found some of the other options likeable, but the bottom line is that bank transfers are still relevant. Trustly is a service that wants to modernize online bank transfers by taking away their biggest disadvantage – how long it takes to get them processed – while keeping all their advantages intact.

About Trustly

Trustly has been around since the year of 2008, which is also the year in which it signed its first deals with a number of online retailers. At that point, the entire service was seen as a niche and it wasn’t nearly as popular as it is nowadays. That all changed in 2010, however, as Trustly decided to expand its services to more countries in that very year, with the company’s revenues jumping accordingly. In 2014, Trustly’s revenues surpassed the mark of $12 million, while it also managed to sign partnership deals with Groupon and PayPal in that very year.

The company is – and always has been – headquartered in Stockholm, with the number of employees currently standing at more than 80. Apart from Sweden, Trustly also has local offices in Malta and Spain.

How It Works

There’s nothing complicated when it comes to using Trustly for an online payment. First of all, you have to select Trustly as your preferred payment method at your favourite online casino or bookmaker. Once that is done, select the bank you are using and log into your bank account in the same way as you usually do. Then, you just choose which account should the payment be made from. After a brief verification step, your payment will get processed and the merchant will be notified.

Since the notification is usually instantaneous, your casino deposit should be available in a matter of minutes – a welcome change from the typical three-day wait that regular bank transfers tend to carry. No registration is required and there are no downloads to worry about either, which means that the entire process always remains both swift and simple.

At the time of writing, Trustly was completely free for personal use.

Additional Features

Those of you who are hoping for a complicated service with a lot of additional features will be disappointed to learn that Trustly is completely bare in that regard. However, we would actually see that as a positive thing, as it allows the service to stay without any necessary registrations and downloads. What makes Trustly attractive is how efficient and smooth it is – and we guess that customers that are looking for a lot of promotions and additional features can always head in the direction of one of the e-wallets.

Privacy and Security

Accessing your bank account through a third-party service might not look like the best of ideas, but Trustly is always doing its best to ensure that no data will never get stolen by keeping their security protocols up-to-date at all times. The company also guarantees that no data is ever stored on its servers, which naturally considerably reduces all the possible risks. We are yet to see any noteworthy scandals or complaints regarding this and all the necessary licenses are in place as well, so we’d have no issues trusting these guys to keep our data safe.

As far as privacy is concerned, Trustly won’t really help you all that much, since all the transactions are going to show up on your bank statements, but they will show under a “Trustly” name, so that’s a benefit that some customer might appreciate.

Known Issues/Problems

We don’t really have any issues with the service that Trustly offers, although we should note that it isn’t available in every single country out there. In fact, only 29 countries were supported at the time of writing, with the company covering virtually the entire European continent. The support is still expanding, but the process is very slow, so you’ll do well to look elsewhere if your country or bank isn’t supported at the moment.

Secondly, we shouldn’t fail to note that payments made through Trustly aren’t subject to the same conditions and guarantees as your regular bank transfers or credit card payments. This means that you might be missing out on some of the loyalty programmes and refund guarantees when paying through Trustly. This, of course, might not be an issue if you intend to use Trustly only for gaming deposits, but it’s something you’ll need to bear in mind for all other transactions.

Summary

Whether Trustly is for you or whether it’s something that’s best left alone largely depends on your stance towards bank transfers. If you’re currently using them as your preferred payment method, Trustly is a service that might become your best friend, as it’s bound to improve your overall experience. If you don’t like direct bank transfers for reasons other than their slowness, however, Trustly is something that you can safely ignore.
