Journey to the West Slot Review

It’s really hard to pinpoint the exact reasons behind that trend, but the truth of the matter is such that we saw tens of Eastern-themed slots getting released in 2016. We’ll never be able to cover all of them, but we did decide to review Journey to the West, which was produced by Pragmatic Play and which saw the light of the day in the October of the aforementioned year.

Theme and Graphics

Although the slot does have the word “West” in its title, its atmosphere is decidedly Eastern and so is its cast of characters. We aren’t incredibly well-informed when it comes to Chinese mythology, but it seems that the game is loosely based on the mythological figure of Monkey King. In any case, the graphics are beautiful and we do like the fact that all the traditional card symbols have been replaced by various Chinese symbols, as that naturally makes much more sense.

Thankfully, we don’t have anything negative to say when it comes to the slot’s audio either – the music is fitting and so are the sounds.

Gameplay

With the theme and graphics now wrapped up, let’s take a closer look at Journey to the West’s gameplay features, starting with the mandatory Wild symbol.

In this game, it comes in the form of an emerald emblem, but all it does is that it substitutes for all regular symbols when making winning lines.

Journey to the West Slot

The Wild symbol isn’t what will get you going, however – that role was assigned to the Scatter symbol that has “Free Spins” written all over itself. Just get three or more Scatters during a single spin and you’ll be rewarded with a grand total of five free spins, with the option to get three additional ones by finding more sets of Scatters. The number of free spins that you can get in one go isn’t limited, so you can chain tens of them together if you’re lucky enough!

That’s not all there is to the Free Spins, however, as you’ll also always have a choice to make at the beginning of every single batch of Free Spins. There are five options to choose from, with each of them coming with a different stacked symbol and win multiplier. The symbols with lower values come with higher win multipliers, but you can be brave and choose to go without a win multiplier. What you’re going to get in exchange is a set of reels with stacked Wilds – and those can naturally make for some excellent payouts! It’s a choice that only you can make, but we most certainly appreciate the fact that one can choose which way to go.

Technicalities

Journey to the West features five reels and three rows, so there aren’t any surprises waiting for you as far as the setup is concerned – and there are no surprises on the paylines front either, as the number of them stands at 25.

It’s also impossible to change the number of active lines, but that doesn’t have any effect on the number of available betting levels, as players can use two different sliders in order to adjust their desired stakes. It all starts at just €0.25, but high rollers that want to play for more can go for the max bet, which has been set to €125.

The theoretical RTP (return to player) of Journey to the West stands at 96.47%, which is fully in line with our expectations.

Summary

Although Journey to the West isn’t going to top any popularity charts, it’s a very adequate mid-range slot that has some extra value in the form of its unorthodox theme, so we’re happy to recommend it to two groups of players – those who like slots with Eastern themes and those who like going through a large number of games without ever settling down.

It isn’t terribly innovative and it hardly excels on any particular front, but its gameplay is thoroughly enjoyable and we’re sure that you’re going to get at least a few hours of fun from it, which is the one thing that sets it apart from all the completely run-of-the-mill slots that aren’t even worth checking out for most players.

Where to Play

Journey to the West was produced by Pragmatic Play, a company that’s now starting to get its games to a decent number of high-profile online casinos. It’s yet to make that one big breakthrough that would allow it to well and truly stand with the best, but we do already have one reasonably good casino recommendation to give you in Spartan Slots casino.

In fact, Spartan Slots are the perfect fit for players that like to enjoy games from smaller games developers, as they are getting the vast majority of their slots from studios like Pragmatic Play and Betsoft. One would think that these just can’t be as interesting as games at, say, a NetEnt or a Microgaming casino, but that assumption is completely wrong – just give games like Birds! or Alkemor’s Tower a go!

The interesting games arsenal isn’t the casino’s only selling point, however, as it also has a large number of intriguing bonuses and promotions that players with all kinds of bankrolls can take advantage of. From the obligatory welcome bonus to tournaments and price draws, Spartan Slots have all the bases covered!

To round things off, we’re going to mention that the casino also has live casino tables waiting for all players that would like to play live blackjack, roulette or baccarat in a very realistic setting. All in all, Spartan Slots casino is the complete package – so what are you waiting for?
