Roaming Reels Slot Review

As far as we’re concerned, there are basically two types of games developers on the market nowadays. First, there are developers that are trying to push the industry forward by coming up with crafty ideas. Second, there are companies that are happy with reproducing the same formulas over and over again. Ainsworth slots belong firmly to the latter category, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that their games aren’t worth checking out. After all, it’s impossible to give any verdicts without giving them a chance – and that’s why we’ve decided to take an in-depth look at Roaming Reels, one of Ainsworth’s 2016 releases.

Theme and Graphics

The slot’s name doesn’t really give anything away as far as its theme is concerned, so let us tell you that it’s all about Africa here. More specifically, it’s about the fauna that lives on that continent, so what you’re going to see on the reels is a mix of lions, ostriches and zebras, while the boring suite of card symbols also makes an appearance. That last part is actually a bit disappointing, but we suppose that we can’t criticize the designers too much given that these symbols are basically ever-present. In any case, the graphics are pretty crisp and reasonably modern.

What isn’t as modern, however, is the slot’s approach to audio. While there are some sounds to get you excited whenever something happens, there’s no background music to accompany you on your quest for nice payouts. We reckon that it’s a fairly tolerable absence, but it obviously does make the game’s atmosphere less immersive.

Gameplay

Alright, then – let’s now turn our attention to the slot’s gameplay features, starting with the Wild symbol.

In Roaming Reels, it comes in the form of a beautiful lion – and what it does is that it works as a substitute for all the other symbols when forming winning combinations on active paylines.

The Wild symbol isn’t where all the fun is, however. That role is assigned to the Scatter symbol that looks like a sunset. As one would expect, these Scatters pay out in all positions – but the more important thing is that they can also hand you nice batches of free spins. In fact, you can get up to twenty free spins once you find a batch of Scatters on the playing field in a single spin!

These don’t come with any special win multipliers, but the good news is that you can get more free spins by getting additional Scatters – each set of three or more will net you five additional ones.

Technicalities

Since the slot’s gameplay is completely traditional, it shouldn’t surprise you to learn that there are no fireworks waiting for you on the setup front either. The action takes place on five reels and three rows, so the only intriguing bit is that there are one hundred paylines to play with.

What’s more, their number isn’t fixed, so you’ve got plenty of manoeuvring space in that direction. You can naturally adjust the coin value as well, which makes for a plethora of betting levels to choose from – and we can tell you that you can indeed enjoy Roaming Reels to the full even if you don’t have much money left in your online wallet. After all, the lowest amount that you can play for is just €0.01!

That said, the slot doesn’t really excel when it comes to its theoretical RTP (return to player). You can say that we’re all a bit spoiled by slots that offer returns higher than 96%, but that doesn’t really make Roaming Reels look good. The most that you can get from this game is 94.14% – and that’s simply well below the current industry standard.

Summary

No matter how you look at it, Roaming Reels is a slot game that won’t appeal to players that don’t like traditional slot gaming experiences. Why? Well, because it’s all about getting you back to those days in which all slots were simple and straightforward. We wouldn’t dare to say that the entire package isn’t fun, because we know plenty of players that like old-school slots, but there’s nothing innovative to be found here.

Given that, it shouldn’t be hard for you to decide if this slot is worth checking out. If you want to get an experience that’s similar to what you’d get in a regular casino, Roaming Reels can certainly scratch that itch. If you want to get something more elegant and cinematic, however, you’ll have to look somewhere else.

Where to Play

Since Ainsworth mainly make casino games for the land-based industry, it’s not too surprising that the company’s games aren’t currently available at a large number of online casinos. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t any great places to recommend, however – and it’s the Vera&John online casino that we’d like to especially highlight.

Although these guys have been around only since 2011, they’ve already established themselves as one of the more progressive forces on the market, so you can expect to get a truly modern experience when staying at them. This might be in stark contrast to what you can get at Roaming Reels, but we suppose that nobody will mind that – after all, even the most old-school players will surely appreciate the nice website design and the excellent games selection Vera&John come with.

And don’t get us started on the casino’s loyalty programme! Although the vast majority of casinos are content with offering basic schemes, Vera&John have a complex system that rewards players not only for the wagers they make, but also for things like logins and deposits.
